Ubuntu: I Am Because We Are

"We say in our African idiom,
'A person is a person through other persons.' The solitary human being is a contradiction in terms."

- Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Social Activities

A garden party celebration in honor of one of our elders, Eithne R, at the home of Holly J.

At the conclusion of our 200th Anniversary celebration, some of us were found chatting on the lawn, and blowing bubbles, before being treated to an all-congregation ice cream social.

COVID threw a wrench in many of our social events but... people found ways to be social in creative ways. One couple offered an outdoor ice cream social where guests could be socially distanced and still enjoy each other.

Here is a photo of our trip to Columcille, in the Poconos. Bernadette L-S offered it as an auction item. It was fabulous! Columcille is a retreat center where folks can go and commune with nature. There are many different areas within the property for individuals to go to meditate or hold ceremonies. There is even a small chapel where weddings and other events are held. We went on the day of the full moon and toured the grounds, learned a bit about its history and enjoyed being in the woods for a few hours before returning to Philadelphia.

Fundraising Dinners were another fun way to socialize as well as to donate to the general operations of the congregation. One couple offered a four-course dinner for ten people with cocktails on the lawn and dinner on their sunporch.

Game Nights are held about once a month on a Friday night. Board games are available or you are welcome to bring your own. Check the online newsletter to see if a game night is scheduled.
